This is my second review of New Life Ayahuasca. NLA is a wonderful and at times a magical place. Those of you who have never taken the medicine might roll your eyes at my use of the term ‘magical’. That’s OK, just try it and see. Matt and Jeanae have created a safe and caring environment in which one can grow. For those who hear the call of Ayahuasca, the medicine can bring about amazing personal transformations. I am not the same man who first went to New Life a year and a half ago. Then, I was a damaged man who was haunted by a a rough childhood. I was prone to depression and quick to take offense. While I was good at my job, I wasn’t well liked because of my quick temper. Now, after three retreats, I am a changed man. My baseline is ‘happy’ and I nearly always feel content, which is not something most people can say these days. I am much less into myself and I care more about others, especially my family. I am less combative, more creative, and have an easier time seeing other people’s points of view. I feel lucky to be me and I feel gratitude every day. As a result, people like me much more which, of course makes me happier. It is a virtuous cycle. On an objective level, my EQ score has improved dramatically. Of course, this is just my experience. I cannot know what Ayahuasca will do for you. For me, though, it has changed my life – dramatically – and for the better.

Matt and Janae were amazing hosts. Very warm and genuine without being over the top. Matt is an awesome guide who continues to master his craft. Setting and scenery were amazing. And I couldn't forget to mention Jake and Andy who were icing on the cake. I'm sure we'll be seeing each other again.

Thanks you for this experience

The most beautiful and useful experience I’ve done for myself. I will definitely return for all the beautiful things: the space, the hosts and the outcome. Janae & Matt are amazing persons and always there for you when you need them. See you soon new life!

The Gringo Shaman of the Amazon

About Ron Wheelock

Don Ron Wheelock is widely known in Peru as The Gringo Shaman of the Amazon.  He has been serving the ayahusaca community for over 20 years. Don Ron was born in Independence, Kansas. In 1996 he went to Peru looking for a spiritual teacher. Don Ron first drank ayahuasca in Tamshiyacu with famed shaman Don Agustin Rivas Vasquez. While with Don Agustin, he made arrangements to return to begin the intensive training to become a shamanic healer himself using the South American plant medicine, ayahuasca.

Don Ron stayed with Don Agustin for 5 months doing many plant diets. Don Ron then began working with Don Jose Coral Mori, the teacher of Pablo Amaringo and Eduardo Luna, the authors of “Ayahuasca Visions”. After studying with both ayahuasqueros (shamans who work exclusively with ayahuasca), he began working on his own in 2000.

Don Ron is an ayahuasquero/curandero. An ayahuasquero is someone who has trained under a maestro ayahuasquero and has the ability to prepare the ayahuasca brew, complete the icaros and prayers during the preparation, set up the ceremony space and conduct the ceremony.

As a  curandero, Don Ron works with a large variety of plant and tree bark dietas. These dietas form a strong bond between the curandero and the plants dieted. Those plants become allies, and the plants teach the curandero how to work with them during the ceremony and in healing. A curandero can call on one of his plant/tree allies to protect the guest, to bring in the medicine, and help cure a guest.

Don Ron works with various energies and spirits. This skill of managing energies and spirits is particularly important in an ayahuasca ceremony as a person’s energies open up significantly in this space.

Don Ron at Ceremony

Like indigenous shamans have been doing for centuries, Don Ron prepares his ayahuasca by harvesting the vine Banisteriopsis caapi and then boiling it for several days.  After continual praying over the mixture, Don Ron’s “tea” is ready to be used in a ceremony. Don Ron’s strong and pure medicine is used by other ayahuasca retreats in Peru.

Ayahuasquero Don Ron (62 years old) lives with his partner Karina Maria Diaz Paredes and conducts ayahuasca retreats at his compound, El Purguero. He has a 43 year old daughter, Christina, living in the U.S., and a 14-year-old son, Quetzalcoatl Luis Wheelock Angulo. Sebastian, 13,  and John, 19, complete Don Ron’s family.
